Summer Time Slim dowm

Now that spring is finally here that means that summer won't be far away. Many of us tend to hibernate like the bears do in the winter time. We may tend to ease up on our exercise routines and indulge in a few more treats. I will have to say that I am definitely guilty of this offense. Around the colder time of the year I also tend to become a bit depressed. I love to see light and bright color, and there is usually less of this during the winter. Thus in turn, I sometimes do reach for the sweets. I have decided that I will start back my exercise routine with the gym called Curves this April.

I will also begin my weightloss program with Herbalife International. My intention is to change my way of life and that's what being on is all about, lifestyle change and eating habit change. The exercise routine at Curves is wonderful for any women who has had kids. They specialize there exercise circuit training to target those problem areas that most women have after giving birth. When I get to my goal weigh I will proudly post a story adding my triumph which will also include my before and after photo for all to see. My aim is to get into something comfortable this summer.

I am not saying that this will be easy, because nothing in life is ever easy. My motivation is for me to become a lot healthier and stronger. I have noticed that the added extra weight that I gained has put a strain on my back and my feet. My feet always hurt me now. I always have to take pain pills because of the back pain associated with my line of work as a certified nursing assistant and also the excess weight.

I am not really interested in trying to look like a teenager as some women strive to do. It is only my intention to be able to play outside with my son more with out being out of breath and saying to him, OK honey that's enough, mommy's tired. I think that is a sorry excuse for him and I want to be able to spend all the time that I can with him, because the time that we as parents get to spend with them goes by quickly. I will be sure to leave updates about my progress for all to read about every two weeks once I begin these programs in April. Movie Review (stop-loss)

I have been seeing advertisements about the movie Stop-Loss. This movie is basically a military movie that gives the public awareness about what is really going on with our young soldiers. It seems as though there has been a higher amount of military retention due to the war. Of course, who wants to join the military to go to Iraq and die. The government is very close to having to bring back the draft to replace the amount of soldiers that are getting injured, killed or are just getting out of the military and moving on with their lives. This movie is letting the viewers see what they have to go through i order for them to get an honorable discharge now.

In the movie the government issued that this soldier and his friends had to be automatically reenlisted and serve more time in Iraq, even though they finished their contract agreements. This in turn was the governments way of slowing down retention, and they call it stop-loss. They did their time fighting and they deserve the chance to move on with their families. The young soldier who is the lead in this movie is actor Ryan Phillipe as Sgt. Brandon King. After going back home he and his friends begin to adjust to the civilian life. It takes time for returning soldiers to adjust to life again and they had just started to do just that.

He gave the military all that he had as a decorated war military personnel man. They decide that they want him to do more and that his country still needs him. Well that's unfortunate for them, because this time Brandon decides to go AWOL. He decides that he is not going back to Iraq or back into the military. If a soldier goes AWOL this becomes a federal offense and that soldier has to live as a fugitive for the rest of their life or risk being captured and going to jail. I being a former naval personnel service member, will definitely be honored to go and see this movie, and I would advise everyone out their to go and see it too. It premiers on March, 28Th.

Retirement Woe's Pt.1

Every year people lose focus on what they are going to do when they retire. The most important thing for all of us to remember is that we control when we retire and how we live after we retire. The first thing that must be done by individuals is to start to prepare for this by opening up a retirement fund of some kind.

You can start off by taking out a company 401 K plan at your job. However, it is advisable that you take one out that has 50% matching. This basically means that your employer will put in 50% of what ever you put into the account. These accounts also incur interest and once left untouched can grow into a nice nest egg for you. You can also purchase one of these accounts from an investment firm, such as Edward Jones or even Wachovia. I will advise that you earn more on the incurred interest when you purchase from an investment firm instead of a bank.

Other types of retirement accounts that you can choose to open are IRAs,and Roth IRAs. They are basically called interest rate accounts. They are like savings accounts except that you earn a lot more interest. The difference between the two IRAs is that with the Roth IRA you can earn triple the amount of money that you put into it in a very short period of time. It is also tax free and tax deductible. This means that whatever I put into the account I would get back on my tax return.

I have also learned that the sooner people start a retirement fund the better they will get to live during their retirement age. Now there is nothing in the role book that says that because you have a retirement fund and you reach 65 years old that you even have to retire at all. A person could choose to use that money to live a little bit more comfortable, and still continue earning an income. People are starting to work until a much older age these days, because they choose too. Unfortunately, I will have to state that people also work at a much older age because they did not have a plan. They had no retirement fund and no company pension to assist them.

As time goes by it is becoming a fact that companies are not required to even offer their loyal employees a viable pension plan. Regular savings accounts are just a joke, because you earn very little interest on them. The safest thing that we all can do is get started with a retirement fund today.

Tips for saving at the pump!

For most Americans it is becoming an absolute struggle to purchase gas every week. You just never know how much you will have to shell out at the gas station any more. I thought that it would be helpful for me to write about this situation since we are all experiencing trouble from all of this drama. The main reason why we are having to bite the bullet at the gas pump is mainly because of the Iraq war. Before the war we were all complaining about spending $1.45 per gallon for the purchase of gas. Now we are all screaming about having no choice but to purchase gas at the outrageous amounts of $3.25-$3.65 a gallon. To make matters even worst many of the gas stations have started pushing back their pumps. Tip number one, people check out exactly how much gas you are getting for the money that you are spending. You may hand them $50 and only get $20 worth of gas. This is beginning to make us all really frustrated.

Tip number two, always fill you gas tank up. Don't put in just a small amount thinking that it will go down next week,because nine times out of ten it will be going up instead. Tip number three, try not to go from store to store. It will save you gas money if you try to get most of your groceries and personal items at the same store. I have always been one for hopping from store to store just to catch a good bargain, but this will add up in the long run. You will be spending the money that you save at the gas pump. There are also products that you can purchase that can stretch your gas and make it last longer at Home Depot or Lowe's. Always keep your oil changed, check your tires and have your car running smooth. Run your A/C only if you absolutely have too, because that also can waste gas. Try rolling down your window more. Single Mom's shout out!

This one goes out to all of the single mom's out there. First of all, I would like to start off by stating to everyone out there that I have been a single mom for eight years now. Basically, it was my choice to raise my son on my own. My mother has been helping me to raise him. His father was pretty much a player, but we were from the same school and pretty much the same neighbor hood. He would always seek me out at high school. I was pretty much a loner, because I was extremely shy. I am still shy, but having a child can make you open up and become more outgoing. I realized late in the game that I was lied to by him and that I was pretty much on my own. He acted as though having a baby was like playing with a doll and then going home to his girlfriend that he did not tell me about and then I would have to figure out how to feed him and shelter him on my own. I thank God every day that my mom did not throw me out of her house and say go raise your illegitimate child on your own now.

Unfortunately, this is what happens in African American community. A young girl gets pregnant and her mother says good, now you can how I had to do it. Go do it on your own now. My mother has always believed that a divided kingdom cannot stand. If we all bonded together as families and helped each other out, we would all have a higher standing in society. I was faced with the decision to either stay and end up homeless, because my mom could no longer find work in New York at the time or to move away to the South and make a fresh start. I also had to choose between taking a job in Manhattan that offered to pay me $20 an hour and moving. Some years after making this horrid choice I realized why I had to pray about my answer of should I stay or should I go. I may have been killed or severely injured, because this job was going to be in the World trade center.

I know that my decision was best for both me and my son. I am on my way to becoming a nurse. I hope that my story can help to motivate single mom's. We can do it, be mother and father to our children if we have to. It would be nice to have someone great in my life as a husband to be their for me and my son, but I know that I am glad that I am equipped mentally, emotionally, and financially to care for him. I am not interested in getting any type of child support for him, because it doesn't help and I think that it just opens up a whole new can of worms. This gives the fathers out there a chance to become a Thorn in a single mom's side and can also open up a whole new can of worms. I want to say to all of the single mom's out there that you rock and I want to give each and everyone of you out there a shout out, because we all need one from time to time. We will prevail and we can do it on our own. We can raise our children to be positive and have a higher standing in society one day. So this one goes out to all of you.

The bad Girls Club

I have been watching the Oxygen channel original series reality television show called the bad girls club. Basically they get some girls who have major issues with anger and self control to live together in a beautiful condo. The head of the house hold is the clearly the one called Tanisha. She is the one that tries to keep everyone in line. She has the loudest mouth in the bunch and she doesn't take mess from anyone. All the other girls need to watch out. I think that this show was a great idea to help these young women to finally deal with what has been ailing them. By the time the show ends they will all hopefully be leading fulfilling and meaningful lives. They will learn how to interact with one another and how to finally deal with confrontations the proper way, which would be in a civilized manner. I hope that everything works out for all of the cast members, and I will definitely be keeping track of this show every week Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. You ca also catch the re-runs in the daytime on Tuesdays and catch up on any missed episodes.

Spring is finally here!

I am so happy that I can finally say that spring is here. Early this Sunday we had to wind our clocks forward at 2:00 a.m. I have noticed that every where that beautiful blossoms are starting to bloom. You can also see some really cute yellow flowers on people's front lawns. It is also starting to warm up outside. I especially enjoy this, because it means that I will not have to endure another cold night in my house. The tree's are also starting to blossom and we will soon get to enjoy their beauty and shade in the summer. I think that Spring is the best season because it is not too cold and it is not too hot either. There is a great medium during this season and I am going to enjoy every minute of it.

Beware of online schools

I thought that this was a necessary topic for me to write about. There are many online schools that are popping up all over the place. I myself was even considering taking classes from one a few months ago. That was until I found out that some in some States some most schools would not accept the credits that you earned and you can even be denied testing for State boards. These boards would be in the nursing field. They state that they do not recognize these schools. They also want you to do an internship some where.

I had planned to earn my psychology degree online. I found a school that would let me do the entire thing online all the way up to getting my PHD even. Now of course after learning about this facts I will be reconsidering that decision. No one wants to spend money and waste their time studying for a degree that will not be recognized. A way to prevent wasting time or money would be to go to a recognized college with a recognized program that offers online classes, but also has internships.

A great school to consider for doing the nursing program would be Forsyth College. You can do all of the in class room hours online and go to the school to do the internship. I think that this is very reasonable for me to do, since I have all of my pre-requisites all ready done for the nursing program. I will apply for this programme in the fall of 2009. Wish me luck.

Teaching a child with a short attention span

I thought that I would discuss my dilemmas of raising a child who is very hyper and has a short attention span. Let me start off by sharing how old my son is. He is now eight years old and is a student in public elementary school here in North Carolina. I basically started home schooling my son at the age of one and a half until he turned six. He did not get to start school when he was supposed to at five, because it was too late to register him. He started school at six due to this fact. My son has always been very hyper, so I try to help him by letting him play a lot, and do physical activities.

I began to notice that he would be really interested in the stories that I read to him for a few minutes and then he would just get up in the middle of the story and start playing with his toys. I would have to call him back to sit next to me so he could finish listening to the story. He would do this again for a few minutes and then he would begin to wander off again. I realized that this could be a problem when he would start school. I would always explain to him that sometimes you will have to sit still for a little bit, but that he would get to get up and play eventually.

My son also has bouts with temper tantrums at times when he does not get his own way. He wants to do his own thing and at times does not want to listen to authority figures such as myself. What seems to work best during these times is when my mother or I read stories from the Bible to him, and then we explain to him that God says that children must honor thy mother and thy father. I believe that this confirms things for him and he will listen and calm down.

He started taking piano lessons about a month and a half ago, and I will have to say that I have seen a great turn around in behavior from him. It is my wish for him to join a little league team over the summer and to start him with learning to swim, and martial arts. There is a lot of discipline that is taught during these sessions. It is not only about learning how to defend yourself. I believe that these things will also aid in changing his behavior drastically. If there are any other parents out there that have experienced these types of symptoms in their child I would very much appreciate it a decent comment about this matter.

Trouble in Georgia

This past weekend a terrible storm blew past Georgia, and turned some homes into complete rubble. So far, there was only one fatality noted. I worried about the people and my family when I heard the news on television. It reminded me about the trouble that went on with hurricane Katrina. My experience in the Navy

I joined the Navy right after I graduated high school at the age of 18. I thought that it would be a great learning experience for me. I wanted a chance to get away from home and get out of my shell. All of my life I was always viewed as the sweet,shy,innocent,quite girl. This was what I considered my chance to break out of that mold. The time that I spent in the military was definitely a learning experience. I learned that you need to be able to depend on no one but your self. During my stay I had a long time to think about my life and what I wanted to do with it, because after graduation I really did not know what I wanted to become.

There were also some very disappointing times during my enlistment. One of the most disappointing times was when I was banned from taking my very first enlistment exam. In the Navy everyone gets to advance automatically until they become the rank of an E 3. After this period of time you are required to take exams to advance to the next rank so you can earn a raise. When it was my turn to take my very first advancement exam I studied night and day. I had other higher ranked ship mates help me study and question me all of the time.

Just two weeks before the exam I was informed by my Senior Chief that I was in eligible to take the exam at the time. She stated to me that I was too immature and emotional also too young to be aloud to take the exam. What that meant to me at the time was basically that my youth and also being an African American female was a disadvantage. After I was informed of this they told me that I had the option of re enlisting for another 4 years and that I would have to be sent to a new base. They also said that I would not be eligible to re take the exam for two years. At this point it was my decision to leave the Navy. I was given an honorable discharge.

P.S. I would also like to add to any Navy personell who might find this post to be not true or disturbing to them in any way, that this is all true and it really did happen. It was my experience on my last duty station that the African American's had the lowest rank. There should be no reason for anyone to be witheld the chance to take an advancement examination for the chance to make rank, because there is no guarantee that you will pass the exam. I knew people that had to take the exam twice before they passed it and made rank, and there chance was not completely taken away from them like mine was. That is discrimination in any branch of the millitary or civilian world. I believe that the discrimination was largely based on my youth and the fact that I had a baby face, and yes I will say it again because of my race.

Dry Eyes

I have been noticing for a while that ever since I moved away from New York and moved to North Carolina that I have developed allergies and very dry eyes. I suffer with this almost every day now. I notice that I also get a lot of head aches and migraines. I never thought that moving away from a city that was supposedly filled with smog into the country would make me so miserable at times. I have decided to get started with my spring cleaning early. I have already started vacuuming, which I will be doing every week now that it's getting warm. I will also include heavy dusting of my high ceilings, since they are over 6 feet high. This will help reduce the allergens in my household. It will also be necessary for me to use a humidifier every now and then and also purchase an air purifier. Once I complete these tasks I believe that my dry eyes and allergies will be great reduced.
